Peace

"If you want peace, work for justice"
Pope John VI

What do you think about this idea? Is peace intimately connected to justice?

Of course there is a connection! A direct connection!

However, even if the world was just dandy from a justice perspective, there would still be evil. That of course would feed injustice, but I would argue that peace can only and ultimately come from the source of peace - Jesus.

The Pope's statement does not go far enough. It assumes that the entire problem with the world is injustice, and that confuses symptoms and causes.

Both lack of peace and injustice are symptoms of the same problem: The effects of sin, both latent and direct. To be sure, injustice feeds strife, but my point is that there would be strife even if there was relative justice.

Personally, I do not believe there will ever be a full, true peace until Jesus reigns directly. I'm not of a mindset that we "usher in" the Kingdom, as it is already among us. Jesus Himself will usher in the Kingdom in its fullness, and we labor against the darkness until then.

I think it becomes problematic to view EVERYTHING through a social justice lens. It's too easy to end up laboring against symptoms rather than causes.
